South Jersey Hike Review — Blue Hole, Winslow
We decided to visit the Blue Hole in Winslow this past weekend, and it did not disappoint. Coming from Marlton, it was nearly a fifty minute drive generally straight down Route 73. After missing the semi-hidden turn that is needed to find the Blue Hole, we did finally find it.
There were a handful of cars in the parking lot, it was about 2PM when we arrived. The main gate was closed and locked, so we could drive out vehicle to get closer to the actual lake itself. It was about a half mile hike down some generally rough sandy roads to catch a glimpse of the lake, but we made it. I would not recommend bringing a bike because the sand would be difficult to ride on.
The lake is stunningly blue; I believe mainly due to the existence of sand at the bottom as opposed to mud found in most other lakes. To my knowledge, swimming and diving is illegal at the Blue Hole, due to many unfortunate drownings in the past. The depth increases quickly, the temperature is numbingly cold, and there are strange undercurrents the deeper you get.
The people that we encountered were very friendly; a few enjoying fishing, a group vlogging, and multiple families enjoying a hike on a beautiful day.
We followed the trails for about a mile and a half along the shoreline and were blown away by the views from each place we decided to stop.
One detail to definitely be aware of is that the Blue Hole is located right next to the South Jersey Shooting Club, so hearing gunshots will be a common, if not non-stop occurrence while you are visiting.
This was such an enjoyable hike, and I would recommend it for anyone looking to enjoy nature and experience beautiful views. There only downside to our experience was the sad existence of trash on the shoreline and various charred bonfire locations. I believe that the Blue Hole is a commonly visited night-time party spot that unfortunately does not get cleaned up afterwards, hopefully that can change at some point!
Either way, thank you for reading, go out and enjoy a hike in the beautiful region that we call home.
I am also leaving a map below to help clarify directions for those who may not know how to get here!

After making a right onto Piney Hollow Rd from heading south on Route 73, you will encounter a left turn immediately after coming across the clearing in the woods due to the high tension wires. After turning, you veer to the right onto a sand road where there will be a gate; it may be closed, but you can park your vehicle in the lot, and continue on foot from there!
