The store front of Skyler’s Hoagies.

One of the major components that adds to the level of uniqueness to our area, and any area as a matter of fact, is the eateries that are present. As most of you know by now, I am an avid “foodie” with a ton of interest in trying as many local restaurants/places as humanly possible. With that being said, I stumbled upon a location that I had always overlooked in the past; Skyler’s Hoagies and Catering.

It is snuggled into the oddly placed and foliage consumed Village II Shopping Center on Church Street in Mount Laurel. Growing up, I had frequented this area as it was, and I say this shamefully, where Papa John’s was located, and to be fair, I always regarded the shopping center only as to where Papa John’s was located. This was obviously a mistake.

Do not be like me, and let this misconception shy you away from the other options that the Village II Shopping Center has to offer. By other options I am obviously speaking of Skyler’s Hoagie’s and Catering. Started in 2012, the hoagie shop has been serving our area the finest quality meats and ingredients through a wide variety of sandwiches, specialties, and sides. Another added bonus is that they only serve Dietz & Watson products, which are some of my favorite.

We are a mere 7–8 minutes down the road from the shop, so it is very convenient. We called ahead and placed our order for an early Saturday meal at around 3PM, and much to my excitement, I was told the order would be ready to pick up in only ten minutes. My fiancée and I both decided to try out different items on their vast menu; she ordered a roasted turkey hoagie which is stated as their “number #1 best seller” on the menu. I decided to try out their cheesesteak with provolone and fried onions, as I am on an ever-lasting journey to find the best cheesesteak in South Jersey. As an added bonus, we also threw in an order of Cajun fries (I always enjoy when a hoagie shop offers fries).

After a short drive down the road, I arrived at the shop. The door was open, allowing the fresh air to flow into the building. Our order was ready as soon as I got there. I was thoroughly impressed with the warmth and kindness of the staff; it almost felt as if I was welcomed into a family. They even offered to bag the cold and warm sandwiches in separate bags to ensure the products do not interfere with one another.

After a seemingly endless aroma filled ten minute drive home, we dove into our early dinner:

Cheesesteak with fried onions and provolone cheese on a seeded roll.

The first characteristic I noticed when unravelling the wrapping of the sandwiches was the seeded roll, which is a fantastic first sign in my opinion. Something else that impressed me was the ability to keep the semi-crunch of the roll separated from the perfect moist ingredients on the inside. The cheesesteak was phenomenal; I don’t know where I would place it on a “best of” list, but it was an extremely tasty sandwich.

Secondly, the Cajun fries were a great addition to the meal. I find that many hoagie shops, no fault of their own, find themselves trapped in the mentality that they can only serve potato chips of some sort along with their sandwiches. With that being said, I greatly appreciate a hoagie shop that does offer French fries, and good French fries at that. Another item of note was that the crunch of the fries was not diminished, as it sometimes can be with takeout food.

Cajun fries.

My fiancée’s hoagie was very tasty as well; the Roasted turkey hoagie. I was lucky to trade a bite of my cheesesteak for a bite of her sandwich. It was moist, the turkey was very flavorful; as is very common when quality meats are used. Once again, one of the shining factors was the semi-crunchy seeded roll. Note: if seeded rolls are totally not your thing, they do offer unseeded Italian rolls on all of the hot or cold sandwiches as well.

Overall: I enjoyed this spot. The fact that it was relatively hidden and unexpected added to my enjoyment even more. The food was top-notch, the staff was one of the friendliest I have ever encountered, and the price, which I have not mentioned, was very reasonable. Our order (two sandwiches and an order of fries) came to a little over $20.

Reviews are new to us at Explore South Jersey, so uh, with this being our first official review, we will be going with an “out of 10” rating.

Without further ado, we give Skyler’s Hoagies an:

8 out of 10. We cannot wait to get back here to enjoy what other items their menu has to offer.
